The B724 running near the scenic Solway coast from Dumfries to Gretna Green has been superseded by the A75. The original Gretna to Dumfries road, it has a charming run of milestones, and passes near Ruthwell, home of some early Christian crosses and one of the earliest savings banks, which eventually became the TSB.
This run starts about four miles outside Dumfries as development and bypassing via the A75 seems to have altered the first part of the original road. These milestones are of the stone and metal plaque variety as shown below.
